Export and Import of Currency

Section 2/C of Act 24 of 1994 on Prevention and Impending of Money Laundering sets down the following obligation:

"Persons crossing the border of the Republic of Hungary possessing Hungarian Forint or other currency reaching or exceeding the amount of one million HUF are obliged to declare this fact to the customs authority and submit the data listed in point a) of Subsection (2) of Section 2/B, as well as to report the sum and currency of money possessed to the customs authority."

The declaration should be made both entering and leaving the territory of the Republic of Hungary.

If the declaration required by the Act is not made, the customs authority will institute contravention or - if criminal act is suspected - criminal proceedings.
